City of London and Sunderland celebrate Fairtrade status
Harriet Lamb, Fairtrade’s Executive Director congratulated the City of London Corporation and Sunderland on attaining Fairtrade status for the Square Mile at a reception at the Barbican Centre on 4th December 2007.
Harriet joined Michael Snyder, Chairman of the City of London’s Policy and Resources Committee; George Bush, Chairman of the City of London’s Fairtrade Steering Group; and Duncan Ackery, Chief Executive of prestigious catering company, Searcy’s, at the reception on Tuesday 4 December. The Honourable, the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Leslie Scott, also made the long journey down to join in with the celebration
Michael Snyder, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Policy and Resources Committee, says: “I am delighted that the City of London Corporation has attained Fairtrade status, because it demonstrates our commitment to sustainable environment issues, and I am particularly grateful to several major businesses, who backed our bid to become a ‘Fairtrade Zone’.
“As a major purchaser of goods and services, the City of London and its stakeholders can make a significant impact to the supply chain and people’s lives and, as international citizens, we have a duty to explore ways of improving the quality of life of communities which are less fortunate than ourselves.”
